What is Real Food?

The nutrient-rich foods – grown on healthy, fertile soils – that will protect you against many of today’s most intractable diseases. A growing band of nutrition experts now believe the chief cause of conditions like heart disease, cancer, obesity, dementia and type-2 diabetes to be processed foods, particularly those containing sugar and refined white flour along with products containing highly-processed vegetable oils. Our best chance of avoiding these diseases is a diet of traditional, unprocessed foods like meat, vegetables, milk and eggs, together with traditionally processed foods like butter, cheese and whole-grain bread.

However, to contain the nutrients that protect health these foods must come from very special farms – real farms. On many of today’s farms the soils are damaged by decades of chemical use. Soils are so depleted of life that they are no longer capable of producing nutrient-rich crops. Also on modern farms ruminant animals are kept in sheds and fed – for them – unnatural feeds such as cereal grains. To produce healthy meat and milk livestock need to be raised the time-honoured way on grassland. Real farms put soil health and animal health first. This is the best guarantee we have of foods that will keep us healthy too.
